1st ever "Burnt Bagel Award"

from: Ann Jacobson

The 1st ever "Burnt Bagel Award" was presented today (7/6/11) to "Mr. Nim Wunnan". This honor is awarded only on very rare occasions. To earn the "Burnt Bagel" award a person must have tried, with nothing but good intentions, to do something good or helpful for his fellow man. But, in the process of doing this good deed only succeeded in making the whole situation catastrophically worse! The award was presented to Mr. Wunnan for his valiant effort to add a little crispness to an otherwise under toasted and stodgy bagel, but only succeeded in "almost" burning down the entire building! Great job! Congratulations and well done Nim. Oh, and, Nim.... quit touching Andy’s shoes!

The Burnt Bagel Award

The Burnt Bagel Award

We have a small office. It keeps us focused, makes it easy to stay in sync throughout the day, and cuts down on the dart gun wars that we used to have in our last place, which was bigger. It's easy to know what everyone else is doing at any given moment, which means that we are free to stick our nose in each others' business if we think we have something to contribute. This ambient awareness fills a certain need that companies are often tempted to fill with regular meetings or reports, and it makes the meetings we do have quick and easy to fit into the flow of the day.
It also provides ample opportunities to mess with each other. (I am no longer allowed to touch Andy's shoes.) So when I heard the toaster ding and saw that Roberto's bagels were still sadly cold, stodgy, and nowhere near as toothsome as they would be if fully-toasted, I was sure to mention that this was one of the "feeling free to contribute" moments and not one of the "you should know better than to let your guard down" moments. I turned the dial past the outline-toast icon, past the half-and-half-toast icon, and maybe a nudge past the filled-in toast icon. Wouldn't want to make Roberto get up again.
Satisfied that I had contributed to the smooth operation of the day, I sat back down to work and so did Roberto. Five minutes later the office was full of smoke. My plan to complete the toasting of those bagels had succeeded beyond my wildest dreams. We all had a good laugh, most of them directed, fairly, at me.
Little did I know that my success would be recognized with an artisinal, handmade award. I am the honored first recpient of the Burnt Bagel Award, in recognition of a well-intentioned effort to help out which went a little off the rails. I say first, as I am sure that I will have to pass it on to a more deserving recipient one day soon. Burnt Bagels are the inevitable byproduct of staying engaged as a team. There would be no burnt bagels if we all just kept our heads down and worked only on what was assigned to us. If we're all looking for opportunites to help or to infuriate each other, I can live with the occasional comic screwup. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go kick Andy's shoes under the couch.

The Next Step in Our Mission

Its amazing that two weeks have already passed since the last big post.  In that time already so much has happened so let me grab some highlights of how we are taking what we have learned in the last few years to serve our customers and our community better than we ever have.

civiSERVER is Being ReBorn:  Some of you may know that two years ago we launched a managed service for civiCRM.  We had a lot of customers come and go and, thankfully, many who have stayed.  The core lesson in all these relationships was simple - be clear if you are a product or a service and communicate that effectively.  With that in mind we are focusing on a few key areas to take civiSERVER to the next level and server the CiviCRM and Non Profit communities much better:

1.  civiSERVER is a product comprised of civiCRM plus civiBASE (our own API for civiCRM) plus JQXL (our UX Web Integration Library).  It will be offered for a monthly fee with set usage limits which can be adjusted based on account level.  We are considering a free level as well for those new startups who need some basic tools to get moving.
2.  civiBASE and JQXL are two libraries which change the way we use and integrate with CiviCRM.  civiBASE will be receiving a much needed public release of documentation along with code helpers to get started.
3.  JQXL will be open sourced.  This will be most exciting to all of you struggling to create custom CiviCRM interfaces and/or want to work with CiviCRM in a non-drupal environment.
4.  raSA will offer services to build custom component on top of civiSERVER but will not be customizing civiSERVER any longer.
5.  raSA will offer services for completely customized CiviCRM builds for high dollar clients.  Our aim though, is to find more efficient ways to serve the small organization cost effectively.

Keep an eye open for upcoming releases of features, open source libraries and a possible rebranding!!!

This is About raSA

In the last six years raSANTIAGO + Associates LLC (raSA) has gone through a lot of changes and learned a lot of lessons.  We're now consolidating those lessons to reinvent ourselves and bring a new raSA to our customers and the market.   What starts here is our story focusing on the core insights and values that form our services and products.  Enjoy!

Let's begin with what we're up to with our web presence and how raSA approaches web presences for our customers.  We often end up developing web presences for our clients and get a lot of inquiries about the cost of developing a website.  Here's a distillation of what we think is important about web presences and how that translates into good technology and costs.  Its also what is guiding our own web presence development.

1.  Tell a Story

Websites are one of the most cost effective ways to create meaningful relationship with your customers and supporters.  At raSA we take the approach that good websites that tell stories which lead to action.  For example, a small business has a story to tell both about itself and it product or service.  A non-profit has a story to tell about a societal need its fulfilling.  In both cases the pointed of the story is how the consumer becomes involved in that story.

2.  Start Anywhere and Start Now

Your story is going to evolve so waiting to capture it perfectly is not worth it.  Start with your most recent thoughts, innovations and successes.  From there the story will evolve.  Many successful businesses started their web presences with a simple blog highlighting events.  They began telling their stories and as customers came they expanded into e-commerce and elaborate product pages.  The important thing is to get started now.

3.  Get Feedback and Adapt

Whatever you do always gather feedback.  Google analytics, comments, like buttons, "follow us" buttons and "Contact Us" forms all provide simple and effective ways to get feedback about who is connecting to your site.  Its hard to know what exactly will work best for reaching your audience or how long it will work so plan to adapt.  This means that websites are always changing and the best way to manage that is to think of your web presence as a set of small features which can be added and removed easily.

4.  Choose Light and Flexible Technology

The MODx content management system is raSA's tool of choice.  What makes it work well for our clients are three key features: 1) its easy for non-technical users to add content 2) it integrates with web services trivially and 3) it allows for the rapid creation of a simple presence that can be incrementally and inexpensively adapted.

5.  Always Have Something New to Say

In the end we return to #1, tell a story.  You can't tell the whole story at once.  Fortunately you do not have to.  Its better to always have the next page and chapter of your story to tell.  It gives everyone a reason to come back and take part in the part of your story.
